Chic Wedding at Brooklyn Winery • Deborahann Photography

The moment we saw Deborah's first peek of the wedding on Instagram over the summer, I knew this wedding was one we needed to share. Sacha and Ricardo's Wedding is everything you imagine a chic Brooklyn Wedding would be, and more. With both the bride and groom having roots in Brooklyn, the "where" was an easy decision. Together, Sacha and Ricardo found the most incredibly talented vendors to bring their dream to life, and from the look on their faces, it's clear these two had the time of their lives! Deborahann Photography captured every joyous emotion and thoughtful detail, telling the most beautiful story of their perfect spring wedding.

From Deborah: Sacha and Ricardo initially met at the Jersey Shore several years ago. They had their mutual friends and would spend lots of time together enjoying beach life. It wasn't until years later that their relationship began!

This couple has a real love for food and fantastic red wine and love to frequent several of their favorite restaurants in the Brooklyn area. Ricardo also loves to cook so you can always find him in the kitchen whipping up some yummy new recipe and Sacha right by his side to assist! So as we all know that with great food and wine comes the need to hit the gym and these two absolutely love their time spent together working out. Another love that their share is travel and so for their honeymoon they chose to visit South Africa and Mozambique. I cannot wait to hear all about their adventures and see some gorgeous photographs!

Both Sacha and Ricardo were born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Ricardo grew up in Carroll Gardens and Sacha's parents had lived in the area before she was born and she regularly loves to visit this beautiful neighborhood and enjoys all of the fun things it offers. They share a beautiful home in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn where they get to wander over to a local park and watch the many beautiful sunsets right over the Verrazano Bridge.

When it came time to the planning of their wedding, they both knew it had to be in Brooklyn. They loved the Brooklyn Winery so they decided it had to be the place for the ceremony and also the reception. Sacha and Ricardo wanted everything to be perfect as all couples do. They truly put their heart and soul in the planning and choices of every little detail for their special day. From her gorgeous wedding dress made by Rebecca Schoneveld to her floral arrangements and bouquets that were artfully created by Rebecca Shepherd floral design, everything came together perfectly. Her bridesmaids pretty blue dresses were from BHLDN and complimented the groomsmen so wonderfully with their dashing navy suits from robbieandco. The winery was adorned with two beautiful sprays of flowers atop the wine barrels with the most lovely greens and lovely pink flowers consisting of many cherry blossom stems mixed with beautiful spring flowers. It brought such a elegant atmosphere for the ceremony.

Sacha chose the Wythe Hotel located in the heart of Williamsburg to get ready for her big day. The heartbeat of this sweet town is just perfect. I love the location of the Wythe hotel which is situated on a corner and has the prettiest sign ever! Everything was so nice and close in proximity which made it so nice for all of their guests. It was the perfect place to spend the night before her wedding knowing she would be waking up to the warmth and glow of the NYC skyline.

One really special part in particular of the wedding day was having their three handsome nephews and sassy little niece as part of their bridal party. The kids absolutely stole the show as kids always do. Seriously they were the cutest little people ever and each one made it down the aisle!

After a full day of getting ready, Sacha surrounded by her closest friends and Ricardo just hanging with the guys in their apartment, it was time for their first look. As it turned out to be a rainy day, we were still able to do so outdoors and the photos were quite adorable with the pretty umbrellas that Ricardo and Sacha hid under. I never appreciated those dancing little raindrops before and they added a special little touch to the photographs. From there we all headed over to the winery for some portraits, bridal party fun shots and the family portraits. As it was raining, we needed to do all of our photos for the day inside and the winery could not have been more perfect in every way for our scenery. When it did clear up a little, we actually were able to step outside for some fun shots.

Following the ceremony, the party began with an awesome cocktail hour followed by great food, fabulous wine and it continued on until the midnight hour with laughter and dancing filling every ounce of the winery. It was a beautiful celebration of a perfect couple!

How to Start Planning Your Wedding • Blogger Bride Kristen from Maid of Henry

Our favorite bride-to-be, Kristen from Maid of Henry, is back with some of her best advice for all of you brides and grooms to-be! "When asked what my most valuable resource has been so far in my wedding planning, my answer is simple: people!"  Read all about how this Blogger Bride got started planning her big day, and how she chose vendors that would bring her dream to life!

“If you can dream it, you can do it.” - Walt Disney

When asked what my most valuable resource has been so far in my wedding planning, my answer is simple: people! I’m fortunate to have been a part of so many of my loved ones’ wedding journeys where I was able to learn about and experience many different wedding vendors. It is important to find vendors that you can trust will take the time to get to know you and your fiancé so they can bring your wedding dreams to life!

Very soon after Kevin and I got engaged, we began our venue-venture. When it comes to choosing your perfect venue, I encourage you to make a list of any “nonnegotiables” you may have. Mine were: ballroom windows and outdoor cocktail hour space. I also knew that a venue set on the water was something I would love to have but didn’t necessarily need. We used these elements as a guide in our search. We did a lot of our research online! I created and used a very detailed template to record each venue’s important information such as capacity and distance. We decided on a venue that Kevin’s mom mentioned in conversation after hearing what we were looking for. After we walked into the ballroom with floor-length windows which looked out on the outdoor patio and serene lake, we saw our initials on the fireplace from a wedding the night before. A that moment, we knew it was fate and signed the papers!

Immediately after finding a compatible date between our venue and church, I reached out to the photographer we wanted (the beautiful and amazing Nicole DeTone) to make sure she was available that day! I’m lucky that she’s my best friend’s sister in law because I knew I wanted to use her long before Kevin and I were engaged. Before you book your photographer, decide how you want your wedding day to be captured in photos. Some photographers have an artsy way of capturing moments where they incorporate special angles and creative lighting. Other photographers have a more simplistic and traditional style. I’ve always loved a clean, soft, elegant look and that’s exactly what Nicole’s photos reflect. In addition to timeless photos, we also wanted the energy and spirit of our wedding day captured. I contacted a few of my bride-friends and began researching their recommendations. After watching many, many sample wedding videos, we felt a spark with one particular company that specialized in created movie-like videos that were loaded with love and had high energy. We set up a phone-date to run through some questions we had and when we saw how overly accommodating and personal they were, we booked them!

As far as entertainment, bands and DJs both have their perks! It is totally dependent on your personal preference and budget. A great DJ can usually play any song you’d like to hear, and it will sound exactly how you know and love it. Bands are dynamic and can absolutely set the tone for your reception! Whichever you choose, you absolutely must listen to them live beforehand (if possible, as a wedding guest!). As Kevin and I thought back on the entertainment at some of our favorite weddings, a special one came to mind. We remember being on the dance floor the entire time which is the surest sign of great entertainment. After asking the bride and groom about their experience with this band, they told us exactly what we wanted to hear. The band was reasonably priced and extremely accommodating! Kevin and my nonnegotiables for a band were that they had to have both a female and male singer and we also wanted a band that took minimal breaks throughout the night. This band had both of our wishes and after listening to them again at a live showcase, our decision was made!

I’m sure you’re seeing a pattern! All of the vendors Kevin and I chose fit our personal style and were people we felt comfortable with. We based our decisions on experience, credible referrals, and reviews. We trust that the vendors we chose will contribute to making our day wonderful and I hope this serves as a helpful guide in finding your dream-vendors too!

Stylish New York Wedding at Central Park Boathouse • Amy Rizzuto Photography

We're total suckers for the classics, and this New York City wedding from Amy Rizzuto is so gorgeous, we had trouble choosing our favorites. A timeless navy and white color palette, a modern but sophisticated dress and truly elegant decor is a recipe for perfection. The best part of this wedding is that it is completely season-less... If you didn't see the date on the invitation (or the leaves on the trees in Central Park), you'd never know it took place in the middle of the summer! Grab your coffee and get ready to fall as hard as we did for Tia and Anthony's epic Central Park Boathouse Wedding!

From Amy: There is something about a Central Park Boathouse wedding that pulls at my heartstrings. The natural wood beams, exposed brick, and the beauty of the surrounding park…it is all just so ROMANTIC! Lia and Anthony tied the knot here on an absolutely perfect summer day. After getting ready at her parent’s home in Madison, Lia headed into the city to marry her childhood sweetheart Anthony at Holy Trinity Church. Their Greek ceremony was truly spectacular and their rice exit was so much fun! Following a short trolley ride to the Boathouse, Lia and Anthony made their way to their favorite locations in Central Park for some gorgeous sunset portraits! Lia and Anthony were such joyous newlyweds and these moments were some of my favorites of the day. Cheers erupted from the deck of the Boathouse as Lia and Anthony entered their cocktail hour on a gondola! The night included plenty of Greek dancing, heartfelt speeches, and a delicious New York cheesecake for dessert. Yum. :)

Romantic Vintage Wedding at Buttermilk Falls Inn • Sarah Tew Photography

While you're recovering from your Turkey hangover, here's a little pretty for your Friday. This romantic vintage wedding from Sarah Tew Photography is as gorgeous as they come. Michael and Sarah described their wedding style perfectly "a little bit of laid back, vintage, slightly nerdy charm". Buttermilk Fall Inn and Spa in Hudson Valley, NY was the perfect backdrop for their incredibly detailed and stunning day. Brides and Grooms: get ready to pin all of these incredible details!

From the Bride: Michael and I really wanted an outdoor wedding venue that would allow us to hold all of our events on site. We fell in love with Buttermilk Falls Inn with the beautiful waterfalls, pond, weeping willows and river views. After that, we just hoped to add a little bit of ourselves - a little bit of laid back, vintage, slightly nerdy charm. Michael wanted some darker colors - navy and dark red and I wanted something light and springy - a little bit of blush and cream and we both agreed accent this with our favorite metal, antique gold. We chose to keep the bridal party style a little more relaxed with short dresses and dark blue suits. The outdoor sites were gorgeous already, and only more beautiful with the addition of our florist's beautiful creations. For the reception, we wanted to interject a little bit of our medical/epidemiological sides. Instead of table numbers, we used black and white symbols for guests to find their tables. Once at the table, they would find an explanation of a famous historic medical or public health figure which correlated to their symbol. It was a little confusing and a little scientific, but very us. I loved the cream lace tablecloths and chose to accent these with brass candlesticks, votives and just a few flowers. After an amazing dinner, we just wanted to have a great time with our friends and family. Dueling pianos was definitely the way to go!

From Sarah: Sarah & Michael live in Baltimore and were married on a beautiful Saturday in May up at one of my favorite venues in New York’s Hudson Valley, Buttermilk Falls Inn. Though there was a chance of rain it held out long enough that this sweet couple was able to have their ceremony on the patio overlooking the Hudson River. I loved the vintage style veil Sarah wore with her dress, which was also stunning and perfect on her! Their ceremony was officiated by the groom’s brother and he did a great job— meanwhile the groom’s brother had us all laughing by brandishing a sword at a key moment— it was all so well done! While guests strolled up through the grounds to the Barn where the cocktail hour and reception were, I got to make some pretty portraits with Sarah & Michael— the ponds, the waterfall, the giant weeping willow trees, this place has so much to work with! For their reception the couple had hired a unique ‘dueling pianos’ act to provide music, and after some delicious farm-to-table food the guests were up and on the dance floor! I was so thrilled to be there to capture this lovely wedding— congratulations to Sarah & Michael!

Meet-the-Maker • DeBrosse

We're so thrilled to be sharing the story of Teresa Carter today, and her beloved shop, DeBrosse. DeBrosse is shop in NYC, creating knitwear (and patterns!) for men, women and children, and most importantly, a shop that benefits Haitian orphans. Get to know her story and the heart behind her business below, and then head over and shop for some gifts. The best gifts are those that give back, and we're so excited to support Teresa this holiday season!

The Story of DeBrosse

I first learned to crochet so that I could make blankets for boys and girls growing up in the orphanages of Haiti. One of my first blankets went to a bright-eyed 4 year old boy named DeBrosse. He is as mischievous as he is lovable, and his story forever changed the way I see the world.

I opened this shop in his name, setting aside 15% of all sales to help fund our two partner orphanages. Your money works to do things like sponsor a child through a year of school, ensure a newborn has access to nutritional formula, and provide a young reader a book in his native language.

As of August 2016, I took a more proactive approach to orphan care, and invested in their mothers. The lack of job opportunity forces many Haitian women to leave their children as orphans, as is the case with little DeBrosse and his mother Kathia. You can read about that adventure here: http://sampur.se/2bR7l0J

With great joy, I am excited to announce that your purchase now also provides a job, stability, and dignity to Kathia, who has been wildly underestimated for far too long.

Intimate Pennsylvania Lake Wedding • Allisha Linnea' Photography

A big dose of pretty from Allisha Linnea' to start off this chilly November morning. Emily + Matthew's intimate wedding, on her grandparent's property, was all about family, handmade details and couple totally in love. With their parents as their bridal party, the most beautiful neutral color palette and a bottle of wine saved 26 years just for this very day, these two quite literally had the wedding of their dreams.

From Allisha: Emily and Matthew exchanged their vows on her family's property by a lake in a small town named Parkwood in Indiana County PA. Emily grew up with her mother living next door to her grandparents whom own the property. Although Emily & Matthew live in the city now, this location held a special place in their hearts. Emily's mother walked her down the aisle and was her maid of honor. Matthew's father was his best man. Their colors were blush, mint, and neutral tans. She had gorgeous big succulents throughout her bouquet and a bottle of wine they opened to celebrate in which her mother bought the year she was born and saved for her wedding day.

Labor Day Weekend Wedding at 1000 Islands Harbor Hotel • Mallori Ma Photography

Sometimes the hardest part of featuring a wedding is narrowing down the photos, and when there are too many amazing ones to choose from, you know the wedding is one-of-a-kind. Jennie + Drew's stunning Labor Day Wedding from Mallori Ma Photography at 1000 Islands Harbor Hotel on the St. Lawrence River was absolute perfection. From her dress to the florals, every last detail was romantic and sophisticated. Our favorite part though, is the sheer joy on these two the entire day. You can't help but smile!

From Mallori: First of all Jennie and Drew could not have had more perfect weather for their Labor Day weekend wedding. I couldn’t believe it when I was checking the weather the week before their wedding … three days of blue sky and sun in the mid 70’s! If you grew up around Central New York like me then you know that three perfect days like this and especially during Labor Day weekend is a pretty rare thing! And to top it off Jennie and Drew were getting married at the picturesque 1000 Islands Harbor Hotel nestled along the St. Lawrence River which also meant a weekend of gorgeous sunsets and walks along the river edge!We knew we loved Jennie and Drew from their engagement session! The word genuine comes to mind when I think of both of them …genuinely caring, joyful and fun! And they genuinely celebrated their love surrounded by their closest family and friends in the 1000 Islands which is also where they had their first date! It feels like we have known Jennie and Drew forever, we have loved our time getting to know them and one of my favorite parts of the day was watching them interact with their family. They chose a small wedding party with just their closest family and Drew’s kids who made the cutest flower girl and ring bearer. I love their love for each other!Their 1000 Islands Harbor Hotel wedding was perfect! I have so many favorite moments from the day but I loved watching Jennie and her family interact while she was getting ready. Wine with a straw was a critical part of the getting ready process and Jennie’s Grandma getting her makeup done was just the cutest! Another favorite of mine was watching Drew on the dance floor with his kids … I absolutely love that they were such a big part of the day for Jennie and Drew. And of course the dancing never stopped, such an incredible celebration!!Jennie and Drew had the most amazing team of vendors working with them to make their day a reality. The florals, the planning, the venue, the DJ, the decor … everything was perfect! It was an honor to be a part of this team and photograph Jennie and Drew’s special day. Enjoy viewing some of our favorites from their day and thanks again to all the incredible vendors!

Pinchot Lake Engagement Session • Amanda Souders Photography

When a couple adds something to their engagement session that makes it uniquely "them", we can't help but love it a little bit more. Gabrielle + Thomas had recently taken up kayaking, and seamlessly tied it into their engagement session with Amanda Souders Photography. We love their decision to do both traditional and "fun" photos, and how effortless these two appear in each other's arms. With an engagement session this fun, we can't wait to see what they have in store for their wedding day!

From Amanda: I was able to meet Gabrielle and Thomas in person at our engagement session after only being able to Skype previously as the couple is getting married in New Jersey and I live in Pennsylvania. We had a so much fun running around Pinchot Lake in York, PA. Gabrielle and Tom had the fantastic idea to incorporate their newfound love of kayaking into their session. I loved it!! They even rented a boat for myself to go out on the water in (with some helpers too, of course) at sunset. So fun!! Although I have to admit that the thought of dropping my cameras in the water was there the entire time, it was a blast!

Rustic outdoor wedding in the Appalachians • Allisha Linnea' Photography

All it took was one photo of this Appalachian wedding from Allisha Linnea Photography, and we knew we'd absolutely love it.  Kara + Brian (who were also high school sweethearts) had their dream wedding with their daughters by their side... who also happen to be two of the cutest flower girls ever! Stoney Creek Bed & Breakfast was the perfect backdrop for this rustic summer wedding, and the more importantly, is now home to precious memories this family of 4 made together.

From Allisha: Kara & Brian had a Rustic outdoor wedding ceremony overlooking the appalachian mountains of Pennsylvania at their venue which was the Stoney Creek Bed & Breakfast in Ford City/Apollo. Their reception took place in a small barn on the property. Her colors were blush and gold. The owners are retired teachers and book wedding strictly by word of mouth. Kara had a crush on her husband since she was in elementary school. They dated throughout high school, have 2 beautiful children together and finally had their dream wedding! Kara's wedding bouquet was done by Leechburg Floral Co.

Meet-the-Maker • Carly Totten

We're so excited to introduce you for today's Meet-the-Maker, because this lady is extra special to us! Carly from Carly is Inspired is both a writer and event planner, and is also a contributor to Red Oak Weddings! Carly's passion for weddings, and more importantly, her couples, shines through in everything she touches. From floral styling to day-of coordination, her talent and eye for detail are impeccable, and we're so honored to have her sharing her story with us today!

Tell us a little bit about you, and how you got started!

My grandparents were married for over 70 years, and I was incredibly close with them. They helped to shape me as a person, and they definitely shaped my views of marriage, love, and serving others. They inspired my brand and my heart for what I do, and I keep them in mind at all times.

I’ve always been fascinated by events. I always had to walk by ballrooms and conference centers while visiting hotels when I was younger, and I loved looking at event boards to see what was happening. The funny thing is, I still do all of these things years later! I knew I wanted to work in the event industry, but I wasn’t sure which road I would take.

When I was a senior in college, I decided to intern at Brides Local Magazines in New York City. I loved my experience. From there, I started working for other editorial sites as a freelance writer. A highlight was attending Bridal Market as a Junior Editor for WeddingWire and covering fashion shows from the wedding industry’s top designers. My experiences as a writer have lead to me working with sites, such as Red Oak Weddings and Every Last Detail, and creative businesses to create digital content.

As much as I love writing, I also knew I wanted to plan events too. Whether I’m assisting at a wedding, coordinating the entire day, or designing the flowers, every experience gives context to my writing. Weddings also allow me to be creative in a hands on way, and I love to serve couples and allow them to truly enjoy their wedding day.

What services do you offer and/or what do you specialize in?

As a wedding planner, I love working with couples as a month of planner. Couples who choose to work with me for this service have mostly planned their wedding day, and they turn to me to tie everything together so they can be fully present. To me, serving people in this way is incredibly rewarding!

I tend to be onsite from the moment the bride and bridesmaids start getting ready until the last gift is packed up at the end of the night. Throughout the day, I act as Team Captain to the other vendors, and I also want to become best friends with each couple’s family. I’m there to make sure the couple knows they have a friendly person on their side at all times and to make sure everything runs smoothly.

I also specialize in floral styling. I grew up gardening with my grandparents on my mom’s and dad’s respective sides, so my love for flowers is definitely from them! I believe the bride’s bouquet should make a statement. I also love making moms, bridesmaids, the groom, groomsmen, and dads feel special by designing gorgeous pieces for them. Everyone needs flowers on a wedding day!

I definitely have perfectionist tendencies, but flowers also have a mind of their own. Designing a bouquet, boutonniere, or centerpiece is not about my own vision, but about working with the movement of the flowers. It can be humbling! But, I’m always thrilled when the final piece is something that’s beyond the couple’s biggest dreams. When a bride wants to save her bouquet forever, that’s when I know I have succeeded.

What makes your business unique?

I serve both creative business owners and couples. Not many people work on both sides, and I love that I have that unique ability. I think it allows me to fully understand everyone on a wedding day!

What is your favorite part of working with couples?

I love building a relationship with couples. I’m a listener at heart, and I tend to ask a ton of questions. I’m always trying to find common ground between myself and my couples and clients because that’s where a deeper connection can form. I think when we realize we like the same things it allows couples to realize even more how much I understand them and am forever on their side!

I also love getting to know each couple’s family. I understand your mom’s emotion just as much as I encourage your dad’s sarcasm (and vice versa!). I love when family members realize they can turn to me for anything they may need just as much as the couple can. I’ve had the great honor of having couples say they want to be friends with me and parents say they want to adopt me. The feelings are always mutual from my perspective too!

One piece of advice for couples?

Enjoy your engagement, know your marriage is more important than the details, and…hire a planner! Unlike a photographer who provides a tangible product, a wedding planner provides an experience. That can be difficult to understand unless you have been in a wedding party where a planner guided you through the day or received encouragement from a friend who either hired a planner and loved it or didn’t and wished she had.

Hiring a planner allows you to be fully present on your wedding day and enjoy it rather than continuing to be the point person for all questions and problems. A planner will always have your best interests at heart and will still consult you on bigger questions, but your planner will also problem solve on her own. I once changed a transportation plan in five minutes because a water main broke at a hotel that prevented guests from getting ready. The couple had no idea what had happened, and they kept taking photos with their photographer completely unaware of what had just transpired. The costs associated with a planner are definitely worth it in my opinion!

Childhood career aspiration?

I always wanted to be an artist, but I only ever associated “artist” with “painter” when I was really little. That career aspiration switched to interior design for a long time, and then I switched again to writing, event planning, and floral design. My aspirations have always evolved, and I hope that continues for years to come!

Coffee or tea?

Iced coffee always looks delicious, but I just don’t like the taste of coffee. I wish I did! I’m a tea drinker instead. To this day, “put the kettle on” means there is a problem, exciting moment, or much needed catch up session about to be solved or shared in my family. My grandparents are from England, and their heritage has very much extended to my mom, aunt, cousins, and me. I love it because it’s the same thing my Nana always said when I visited her while growing up. Tea is definitely comfort.

Hidden talent?

My driver’s education teacher taught me how to parallel park like no one’s business. I’m still so grateful for him 10+ years later! It’s a skill that has definitely come in handy when I have to unload flowers in a city or hope to park close by to a venue.
