This timeless nautical wedding in Long Beach Island from Ashley Mac Photography and Bogath Events is the epitome of classic. The crisp combination of navy and white, quintessential nautical details, and of course, the cutest couple made for a pearfect beach-side wedding day. We love Kathleen + Richard's choice of preppy stationery, pennant table numbers and of course, a tandem bike from one of our favorites, Rustic Drift! Sit back and enjoy friends, this one will leave you smiling for the rest of the day!
From Jeanne: Kathleen and Richard met on Match.com and quickly realized their mutual love for Long Beach Island, New Jersey, their Irish roots, lighthouses, and an obsession with craft beer. It was late August in 2015 when they got engaged after a scavenger hunt proposal that took them to all their favorite LBI spots and ended on D-Dock at the Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club. The same spot where they would leave a year later to set sail on the boat that would take them to their wedding reception.
Their wedding was a beautiful day inspired by their love for the shore, family, the beach, and all things sailing. They got married at the yacht club where Richard’s family have been members for multiple generations and where Richard learned to sail as a boy. Their invitations from Apropos set the stage for the day with a simple nautical design and a beautiful watercolor map painted by the groom. They had a traditional Catholic ceremony for which the bride wore a timeless wedding gown from J. Crew, her grandmother’s necklace, and carried a prayer book held by generations of her family’s brides. The bridesmaids also wore simple knee-length navy dresses from J. Crew and necklaces designed and made by one of the bridesmaids, Kate. The groom and groomsmen wore suits from Macys and bowties from Collard Greens.
The ceremony was followed by a bike ride on a bicycle built for two, rented for the day from Rustic Drift. In fact, the couple enjoyed it so much, they purchased and refinished one a few weeks after their wedding! On LBI, everybody rides! Later, they took family pictures at D-Dock, and set sail for a short cruise that took them to their reception. Their reception was full of beautiful details many of which were DIY projects created by the groom. As guests arrived they were greeted by hand-folded origami boats used as escort cards, a DIY card box, and the ultimate sailor’s guest book, a sailboat model built by the groom, with sails for their guests to sign (it’s sure to become a treasured heirloom).
The end of the cocktail hour was signaled by the firing of the Yacht Club’s cannon (used in sail boat racing to signal that the first place boat is approaching dock). In this case it signaled the arrival of the wedding party! The reception featured the Dane Anthony Band playing and the couple’s favorite craft beers on tap. Their centerpieces used lime-light and blue hydrangea and roses placed in the sailing trophies won by Richard’s family with table numbers sailing flags created by the groom. Their cake was placed on a cake stand Richard made from oak and rope. The couple used two wedding cake toppers. First, in honor of a family tradition, they used a set of kewpie dolls from the 1920s. They then did their official cake cutting with a topper that fit with their style and theme. The evening also featured an amazing sunset over Barnegat Bay and a lot of champagne popping!
This timeless nautical wedding used simple details to create a beautiful cohesive experience for their guests filled with old pieces that honored their family’s traditions and incorporated new pieces that are sure to become part of wedding traditions for future generations!
