We're so excited to introduce you to one of our newest Vendor Guide Members, Rustic Drift! Megan and Joel are a husband-wife team based out of New Jersey, and have created a unique business that specializes in hand-built rentals and vintage props. And while we're obsessed with just about everything they make, their commitment to sustainability, using reclaimed materials whenever possible, makes us love them even more. Just wait until you see what they offer... we promise you'll be dreaming up a party, solely built around one of their amazing pieces!
Tell us a little bit about you, and how you got started! My name is Megan and I am the Co-Owner of Rustic Drift. The other half of Rustic Drift is Joel, my husband. I studied entrepreneurship in college at The University of New Hampshire and Joel studied Fine Arts at Stockton. After college I worked for an advertising company. I always had a huge interest in marketing and branding and really learned a lot during my career in advertising. But that entrepreneurial spirit isn’t something that just goes away. Joel started running an ice cream truck in the summers here on LBI straight out of college. In the offseason he worked as a general contractor. His friends would often ask for custom projects for their local restaurants. These projects varied from commercial signage to hand-carved wooden waves and custom reclaimed wood walls. One night over a bottle of wine we started throwing around business ideas that combined our strengths and boom, Rustic Drift was born.
What services do you offer and/or what do you specialize in? We are a boutique rental company. We specialize in hand-built rentals and vintage props. Our products include ceremony arbors, bars, farm tables, benches, lounge furniture, wine barrels, ice cream carts, and other one-of-a-kind items.
What makes your business unique? We are a husband and wife team. Having gone through it ourselves, we have a good understanding of the wedding process from both the vendor and couple side. As for our rentals, every item (aside from our vintage props) is designed and built by us. We focus on sustainability, using reclaimed materials whenever possible. Being eco-friendly is our secret weapon! In summary, it’s really important to us to continue to deliver unique, quality rentals. We promise to put the same amount of love into our products as our couples do their relationships.
What is your favorite part of working with couples? We get to work with couples on one of the best days of their lives. The energy and love in the air that day is undeniable. I get the most insane adrenaline rush on our event days. Working with couples to bring their vision to life is such a rewarding experience. This truly is the best job ever.
One piece of advice for couples? When searching for vendors ask for referrals from the vendors you already have booked. Usually a vendor has a good idea of your style and vision and can make a solid recommendation based on that. We’re all here to help each other out. That’s why I love this industry.
Childhood career aspiration? I always wanted to be a writer. I made a promise to myself that one day I would write a children’s book. It’s actually already started but I can’t get past the first few pages. Writer’s block is the worst.
Coffee or tea? Coffee in the morning and sleepytime tea at night. It’s a vicious cycle ;)
Hidden talent? After two kids I’ve gotten pretty good at animal sounds. I’m not sure it’s a talent but I do a really good impersonation of an elephant. My kids love it!
