We're over the moon to introduce you to one of our newest Red Oak Weddings Preferred Vendors, Lovely Scribe Calligraphy! Leigh's talent and skill are incredible, but what makes her truly one of our faves, is her willingness to go above and beyond for her couples. She's always willing to try something new, and does absolutely everything with a smile. We know you'll love her as much as we do! Get to know her, below!
From Leigh: Hi! I’m Leigh and thanks for taking a peek into my world. I’m detail-oriented to a fault if you ask anyone close to me, my nails are perpetually ink stained, and I'm completely obsessed with my Pug, Mabel and Chihuahua/ Doxie mix, Juju. I visit Starbucks more frequently than I’d like to admit and not so secretly wish I could barter my chalk art skills for free Skinny Vanilla Lattes.
About me and how I got started: Some of my earliest memories were of playing school and perfecting my cursive writing on the massive slate chalkboard hung in the basement of my childhood home. Years of art classes and constant doodling drew me toward tinkering with letters and eventually, the art of calligraphy at the age of eleven. I still remember picking up my very first nib and the joy I felt as the ink hit the paper! It wasn’t until 2010 when planning my own wedding that I would rediscover this buried passion of mine. With encouragement and support from my husband, I formally established Lovely Scribe Calligraphy in 2012 while continuing to work full time as an Elementary School Teacher. Teacher by day, calligrapher by night. Now while on maternity leave after the birth of our little girl, it’s calligrapher by day, teacher by night!
Services I offer: I run a full custom calligraphy design studio. From envelope addressing, place cards, custom monograms, spot calligraphy for invitation and menu design, chalkboard and mirror seating charts to custom commissioned nursery art, logos and designs for the home- if you can write on it- I’ll lovingly do it!
What makes my business unique: My hope is that after working with me, my clients are able to walk away with their pretty little package and breathe a little sigh of relief. A ‘wasn’t that easy and stress-free?’ kind of feeling. I’ve got the heart of a teacher, and I like to think that my patience and understanding shines through in all of my business interactions. Nothing in the world leaves me more fulfilled than encouraging people as they learn. With a Masters Degree in Education and over ten years of teaching experience, I cannot wait to apply all my knowledge regarding theories in learning to my newly launched Calligraphy Workshops!
Favorite part of working with couples: I love it when couples approach me with their newest Pinterest inspired design concepts. It’s what keeps my work fresh and exciting for me!
One piece of advice for couples: I’ve got two. Firstly, breathe and enjoy the process! Wedding planning can be arduous, but remember to keep the big picture in mind. Then, book your calligrapher early on just as you would your other vendors. Doing this at the outset as opposed to one month prior to invite send out relieves the stress of scrambling around at the last minute only to find out there is no room for your job.
Childhood career aspirations: As young as five years old, when asked this very question I would always resolutely respond: an artist or a teacher. This aspiration remained unwavering for me and as an adult I’m happy to be fulfilling my dream.
Coffee or tea: Coffee. Always coffee.
Hidden talent: I’ll let you know when I find it!
