Some of our absolute favorite posts are when we get to introduce you to our Red Oak Vendor Guide Members, and today is certainly no exception. Friends, meet the talented Ashley Gerrity Photography! Ashley's team out of Philadelphia has years of experience, but continues to create a hands-on, boutique experience with all of their couples. Get to know more about her below, (and make sure to read her advice for couples - it might be our favorite!) and then head over to their vendor page to see even more of her incredible work!
Tell us a little bit about you, and how you got started! In my business, I thrive on the unique nature of each wedding that I photograph - I love the no two days of my life are exactly the same. I have spend the last eight years growing & building the best team on earth and pushing myself to be better, faster, & stronger. In my "real life," I love to devour pop culture, read classic literature, and surround myself with warm soft things, like blankets & my two amazing pit bulls.
I didn't know I was going to be a photographer when I grew up. I always love to tell people that I am the accidental wedding photographer. I first started to learn & study photography to complement a food blog that I used to write & manage. I traveled to my cousin's small, backyard wedding and had brought a camera along to chronicle my trip on the blog. One of the things they cut to save money was their photographer, so I became the de facto wedding photographer. I loved it so much that I never looked back. When I got home, I sought out anyone who would take me on as an apprentice and devoted myself to becoming the best at my craft!
What services do you offer and/or what do you specialize in? At Ashley Gerrity Photography, photographing couples in love is our bread & butter. Because of this the largest portion of our work is weddings & engagements. Aside from weddings & engagements, we shoot about 20-25 boudoir sessions annually in our Conshohocken studio space and about 25 family/portrait sessions on location around greater Philadelphia.
What makes your business unique? One of the most unique things about our business is our team & the support we're able to provide our clients. Combined, we've photographed over 300 weddings, so we have so much experience, but none of our photographers is photographing more about 25-30 couples in a year, so each couple is still experiencing a very hands-on, boutique experience. We take the time to get to know each of our couples through face to face meetings, planning worksheets, and pre-wedding shoots. But then, we are able to use our support structure to make sure that everyone has their images in 3-4 weeks and is able to sit down and go through a custom wedding album design consultation within a month of their wedding day, while everything is still new and exciting!
What is your favorite part of working with couples? Our couples are so diverse. We have the chance to work with people from all walks of life, different professionals, many different cultural & religious backgrounds. Getting to know and spend one of the best days of their life along side our clients is the best part of our work. I love seeing how different families come together to celebrate & experience joy!
One piece of advice for couples? Don't be short-sighted when it comes to wedding planning! It seems like so many little details matter - the linens, the guest lists, the professionals you hire - and they do! But more importantly, this is a great time to start to form a vision for your future together, to learn to compromise & come together with your families, and to remember the most important detail. As long as you two make it to "I do," the wedding will be a success and you can start the rest of your lives together.
As a wedding photographer, one of the best parts of what we do is knowing that our couples will be able to cherish their images for the rest of their lives. Our work only begins on the wedding day! Beyond that, we're there to help build out your dream wedding album and help you select and print the photos that will be on your walls to enjoy every day.
Childhood career aspiration? think it depends on what day you'd ask me. I know at one point I was going to be President and another I wanted to be a teacher. Nowadays, I'm the president of my own company and I have the chance to teach & educate other wedding professionals through a variety of channels, so I guess I was a more intuitive child then I realized.
To be honest, I'm still not completely sure what I want to be "when I grow up."
Coffee or tea? If I can only have one, I'll always pick coffee. But I also have a very impressive tea collection!
Hidden talent? I have to say that I've struggled to think of a "hidden" talent, because I believe our talents are meant to be shared with the world. But if I had to say something, I'd say that I think people would be surprised by my depth of passion & experience/training in music. I've studied musical theatre performance in my undergrad, but part of my experience includes studying conducting & having the chance to conduct with one of the university orchestras, many years of piano training, sight-singing, and a deep-seated love & appreciation for opera (which I cannot sing). Although I'm not much of an active musician nowadays, I'll still unwind for a morning at the piano and find that music inspires and fills my life.
